IMPORTANT STATEMENT
EDUCATION IN DOMINION, * POSITION TO BE REVIEWED* Per Press Association. GISBORNE, December 10. At a civic reception this morning, tbe Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister fur Education, made an important statement in regard to secondary education. ThJ Minister said that New Zealand wad ahead of any other country in thp Empire in its provision for post-primary education. The high schools become the people’s schools.* Over 20,000 children were in these secondary schools. It was necessary to take stock and see how it stood. The teaching in the high schools urns unduly influenced by the matriculation examinations, as only one in twelve pupils went on to the university; and the professors’ university examination wag not the right objective. It • gave a bias the wrong way. There was serious overlapping between the secondary and technical schools. It would be good to review the position. He had asked Mr Frank Tate, Director of Education in Victoria, who was visiting New Zealand in February, to'give the Government a report on the whole subject.
