TRADE WITH KAIKOURA

NO VESSEL AVAILABLE CANTERBURY PROFITING BY LOSS OF WAKATU. OUTLOOK FOR WELLINGTON. At tbe meeting of the ■ Wellington Chamber of Commerce yesterday the following report was received from Mr J. Myers:— “Since the e.s. Wakatu was wreckcri there has been no communication by sea between Wellington and Kaikoura, and a small committee has looked into the matter to see whether the service might be renewed, but regrets to report after many inquiries that there are no vessels running out of AVellington available to undertake re-opening of the trade. It requires a vessel of 300-300 tons, drawing not more than 10ft 6in, and- having accommodation for about a dozen passengers and prepared to give a regular service Wel-lington-Kaikcura-Lyttelton. A VESSEL WANTED. “The opportunity has not been loaf by Canterbury which is now doing the trade, though port facilities and charges are more favourable in Wellington. Such vessels trading to Wellington, as would be suitable for the Be-rvice, are already fully occupied on regular runs to other ports.” Mr G. T. Wilson, of the Railway Commercial Department, suggested that things should be sent by the railway route to Blenheim and then Kaikoura. COMBINED SERVICES. Captain Peterson said there was extra insurance of 10 per cent, on goods going from Lyttelton to Kaikoura, whereas the ordinary insurance from Lyttelton to Wellington was only 3s 6d. In regard to the arrangement the Government and the department had made with the Canterbury Shipping Company, it should be a general arrangement with all tbe stopping companies. The trade was not very encouraging, and Levins did not intend to put on another service, but the Anchor Company were considering the matter and might do so later on. At’ present there was no pomibility of any boat oMliag. Tbe report was received.
