CITY PAVING
POSfTON OF PLANTS IMPORTANT WORK OUTLINED FOR FUTURE. DEPARTMENTS PLANS. The paving work in the city approaches ah interesting stage. It is now the very eve of the big drive for better reads, and the final preparation* are being made. At Rongotai all the heavy work is over, the two bitumen kettles have been hoisted into place, much of the plant has been assembled, and the electric power has been laid on. to the machine to drive the mixer.
The remaining tasks are adjustments, all of a minor nature, though they will occupy some time, and it is anticipated that the plant will be ready for use round about the end of the year. The mix sent out from the Ngahauranga plant' is still being used on Thorndon quay. It is the department’s ambition, to finish the stretch from the station to Davis street by Christmas time, in order to give traffic to and from’ the station during the holiday rush the benefit of a full width bitumen road. By the time that this is done the Ngahauranga plant will be due for moving to the Hutt, and the rest of the mix’ for the balance of the work will be run from here, or from the Rongotai plant. Yesterday the paving gang laid & strip of bitumen between the~ehd'df the Hutt Toad and-the beginning of Thorndon quay in order to give traffic ia smooth run through.
