MARINE DEPARTMENT

ASSISTANT OFFICE ENGINEER. Mr John Clark, who has joined ho service of the Marine Department as assistant office engineer and draughtsman to the inspection of machinery and survey ships branch, served the uSual period of early training at the engineering .works of William Balfour, Pittenweem, Scotland, followed by a period at the Walkvnd Slipwac and Engineenng Company’s Works, Wallsend on Tyne. He afterwards went to sea in the service of tlio Shaw, Sacill ad Albion Company ns junior engineer, and rising through the various grades obtained n first-class board of trade certificate in 1911. Ho then retired from the sea, m order to take up a position >n the office of the company. In 1913 he joined the technical staff of William fceardmore and Company at their naval construction works, Dalmurc, Dumbartonshire, Scotland, and held the position of leading draughtsman in 1917. He was then advanced to the position of assistant shipyard manager ' from v.-bidi he retired in 1923. During this period he had charge of the construction, fitting out in detail and trials of vessels for His Majesty’s Navy, and all types and sizes of passenger liners for the mercantile marino.
