“THE BEST SYSTEM”
HEALTH OF THE PEOPLE. DOMINION’S METHODS PRAISED Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 8. Th* methods followed by the public health authorities in the great centres of Great Britain and the United States were closoly investigated by Dr. J. Oumpston, chief health officer for the Commonwealth of Australia, who arrived by the Niagara. Dr. Cumpston also visited Paris, where he attended an in ternationa-l conference of Government health officers, the chief business of which was to revise the quarantine systems of the countries represented. Dr. Oumpston said that he had not seen anywhere any system ae good as that of the dental control of school children in force in New Zealand. He was of the opiuion that the Plunket system in operation in the Dominion was better organised and controlled and more widely distributed than anything lifi had seen in the United States. The Americans did fine work in this direction, but taken as a piece of national Work the New Zealand system was far ahead of anything that had come under his observation. While there wefe some things in the public health administration in the united States whicli cQ'uld with benefit he adopted in these southern countries, and there were. certain phases in the administration of the health of . the people which suggested modifications in the system in operation in Australia, the average of . prosperity, the education and happiness of the people of New Zealand and Australia made many of the drastic methods in force in American communities quite unnecessary DrV . Oumpston, who is accompanied by Mrs Oumpston. will spend some weeks in New Zealand before going on to Australia, and will take the opportunity of conferring with the DirectorGeneral of Health, Dr. T. H. A. VaUnfcine, and his staff in order to bring himself up-to-date on the methods employed in New Zealand.
