A DESPERATE FINISH
RECENT OCCURRENCE IN THE NORTH. An experienced racing man writes giving particulars of what he describes as one of the worst cases he ever saw on a racecourse. He says that at an Auckland country meeting when two horses were fighting out a finish in the straight the rider of one of the horses struck the other horse on the head with his whip. As this did not stop the horse he leaned over, took it by the bridle, and turned its head round* This treatment proved effectual, and the desperado went ahead and won. As no action was taken, one is inclined to infer that the Rules of Racing do not provide for the punishment of those who provide such entertainments, and _we may expect to see the omission rectified at the next Conference. A rule providing for the “severe reprimanding” of any jockey for the careless handling of another jockey’s horse may be looked forward to.
