DRAW WEED-KILLER
BOWLER’S COSTLY JOKE. HIS CONDITION SERIOUS. CHRISTCHURCH, September 10. Mr Alfred Walker, who lives at Heatbcote, was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital, suffering from the effects of poison. How he came to poison himself is a sad story—a’, joke that went wrong. During the afterroon three men were engaged 'in a working bee at the Heathoote Bowling' Club’s greens, and a gallon bottle of weed killer was standing on a table. When Mr Walker came in he went to the table, lifted the bottle to his lips, and said: “Here’s a go, boys I” Apparently he intended his action as a joke. Bub he must have underestimated the quantity of liquor in the ■bottle, and ne was unable to prevent himself swallowing a mouthful The bottle was marlr&d “Poison.” and Mr Walker had been tel dto be careful. Immediately after swallowing the liquid ho fell on. the floor in pain. He was given an eroetio and taken to the hospital His condition is still serious.
