A dinner arranged by the departmental heads of the Auckland City Council was held in the council chamber, when the Mayor and Mayoress, Sir James and Lady Gnnson, were entertained. The death occurred at Upper Aramoho of Air Thomas H. Jones, one of the best know of the Wanganui district early Settlers. A son of one of Wakefield’s pioneer settlers who cans to oofionise New Zealand in 1840, the"! fete Mr Jones with his parents and other members of the family experienced many of the vicissitudes incidental to tho early daj’s. The family set-; tjed l on the No. 1 line in the early ’forties, and there Mr Jones was born in 1852. In subsequent years he was engaged as native interpreter by the late Air John Mardhamt on tho original survey off tho Taupo and Rotorua districts, a work which in those troublous days with the natives entailed great hardships and required Courage as well as physique- Having been closelyas> sociated.from infancy with the Air Jones was an acknowledged Maori linguist, and as such rendered vain able assistance to the survey party during the I years he Was engaged as interpreter. Air Jones later engaged in various ’ pursuits—farming, in the building trade, and .stock dealing. -Of - xecpnt years he Jived a quiet retired life.' He leaves a widow and a large family to mourn bis loss, the latter including Messrs- Walter and Ernest Jones (Rotorua), Mr Dan Jones (Morrinsville), Mesdames Forbes, Readbead, and Wagstaff (Te Aroha district), Mrs Beero (Auckland), Atra Tregear (Christchurch), Airs J. James (Aramobo). Mr Albert Jones (Taurapga). and Misses Edith, Vera, and Rita Jones (Aramqho).
