DOMINION MUSEUM
GOVERNMENT CONDITIONS. A SURPRISE TO THE MAYOR. “When expressing my approval of the action of the Government in regard to the building of a new museum for Wellington,” stated the Mayor, Mr R. A. Wright, to a “New Zealand Times” reporter,, “I was not fully aware of the conditions laid down. 1 understand now that this grant is to be made by the Government subject to Wellington city raising the balance of the money, £75,000. I am bound to say that I fear this ia an impossible task. To raise such a sum of money will, I fear, he beyond the citizens of Wellington, and I express the hope that the Government may reconsider Its decision. If any conditions are to be imposed, they must be modified considerably if the echeme is to be carried out successfuly. 1 was always under the impression that the new museum would be purely a Government undertaking, and these conditions camo upon me as a very great surprise.”
