SAILORS’ FRIEND SOCIETY
Interest and enjoyment were written largely on the faces of Miss Gwen Esau’s seafaring guests at the Sailors’ Friend Society on Thursday, at her popular concert. Encores were frequent. The performers were :—Mrs Edwards, Misses Gwen Esau and Passnu, and Messrs Val Jones, Ferguson, Hawkins, Foster, Brown, Pascoe; Miss Passau and Mr E. Jackson were at the piano. Yet again the competitions filled an important place in the programme. The prizes came from Newtown and went to the Remuera and men in port. Mr T. E. Jones, a valuable worker, was presented with a silver-mounted letter wallet, on the eve of his departure for England. Mr Moore, miseioner, made the presentation, and spoke of the many services rendered to the work by the recipient. Mr B. C. Warnes added his tribute of appreciation of Mr Jones’s services, particularly his musical ability and that of his sons and daughters. He wished Mr Jones a pleasant sojourn in the land of his youth, and expressed the hope that it would not be long ere the mission workers ivelcomed him back again.
