UNUSUAL PROSECUTION
ADVERTISING IN ASHBURTON. POLICE THREATEN RAILWAY DEPARTMENT. Per Press Association. ASHBURTON, March 21. The fact that a certain brand of schnapps was extolled on the immense hoarding outside the railway entrance of dry Ashburton resulted in an interesting prosecution against J. L. Webb, namely, that he advertised liquor in a no-license area. Defendant’s counsel said that the advertisement had since .been removed. It was an anomaly that the defendant should be proceeded against when the railway station walls advertised the merits of at least six brands of whisky and other liquors. A police sergeant said that he would be dealing with the Railway Depart ment without delay. SHOULD NOT BE PENALISED. Magistrate Mosley said that it was tho first case of tho kind that had come belore him. As lon'g as the railway station advertisements were in existence, the “common or garden sort of British public” should not be penalised to any great extent. It was unjust to fine the defendant when a public department persisted m allowing such advertisements to appear. Webb would be convicted and discharged. His Worship added! that future offenders would not be treated so leniently.
