PROTECTED FROM BORER
WHITE PINE MADE IMMUNE. SOAKED IN SALT WATER. DUNEDIN, March 19. Oan white pine timber he protected against borer ? Thye are probably various replies to One of the available replies is supplied by a gentleman who has given some attention to the subject for several years past. He says a thorough soaking in sea water seems to render white pine impervious to borer. This conclusion is based on observation made by himself in the north part of the South Island. Cottages built of white pine about sixty years ago showed no 6ign of borer, hut cottages in the same locality built about 30 years ago are riddled with it. The timber for the older houses was rafted by sea, and thoroughly soaked in the process; the timber for the new houses was transported by more modern methods and never “tasted” salt water. Therefore, it is deduced a thorough soaking in salt water will preserve white pine from the borer.
