TELEPHONE LINES
‘COMPLETE ARRANGEMENT* WELLINGTON’S COMMUNICATIONS GREATLY IMPROVED. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. The Postmaster-General (the Hon* J. G. Coates) announced yesterday that the erection of additional telephone lines between Wellington and Palmerston North, and also between Palmerston North and Napier, has now made practicable a complete rearrangement of the telephone lines serving these places, with the result that the outlets for telephone traffic to and from the Wellington, Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay districts have been considerably increased and improved as 6hown below : Wellington-Napier.—A line is now available for continuous telephone communication between Wellington and Napier. This also brings Wellington into telephonic communication with Wairoa and Taupo and other exchanges in northern and southern Hawke’s Bay. Hitherto, toll communications between Wellington and Napier have been restricted to hours between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. Wellington-Palmerston North. —Two additional outlets have been provided, increasing the trunk line accommodation between these stations from three to five outlets. Palmerston North-Napier.—Although the number of outlets between these places has not been increased, a quicker service is now ensured. Wellington-Otaki. The providing of an additional line between these places has increased the accommodation for toll communication by 100 per cent. Wellington-Levin.—The efficiency of this line has been improved by the use of larger gauge wire. Otaki-Levin.—The providing of two lines between Otaki and Levin in addition to the present outlet via Manakau enables Waikanae, Paekakariki. Paraparaumu and Otaki to obtain communication with stations north of Levin through Levin. Hitherto, it has been necessary for all such communication to be made via Wellington. The accommodation between Otaki and Waikanae has also been increased.
Levin-Palmerston North. —The providing of two direct lines between Levin and! Palmerston North in addition to the existing one on which Shannon is intermediate has considerably increased the accommodation between these places, and will facilitate tho dispatch of traffic between Manakau, Foxton, Tokomaru, Shannon, Levin, etc. These rearrangements, stated tho Minister, in addition to providing a quicker telephone toll service between main exchanges, will also enable a greater volume of traffic to be dealt with by intermediate stations.
