RIDE INTO DEATH-TRAP
STRUCK BY FALLING TREE. TARANAKI FATALITY. Particulars of the aocideut at Newall road, near Okato, Taranaki, m which two boys, Ernest Smith, aged eight, and Ronald Deacon, aged 11, Were killed by a flying branch of a falling tree, show mat it was a remarkably tragic occurrence. A large rimu tree near the road on Mr E. Aylward’e property was 6et on fire on Friday, and it burned all night and during Saturday morning. The boys were riding along the road, both on oine bicycle. . Messrs S. Aylward and H. Close had been watching the burning tree for the pui-pose of warning passing traffic. At about mid-nay tbe two men repaired to a hut nearby for lunch. Through the window they saw the boys approaching the burning tree, and simultaneously yvith their reaching- the spot the tree orashed across the road. A flying branch, detached from the tree by its fall, fell upon the two boys, smashing them to> tbe ground. When picked up one was dead, and the other died about 20 minutes farter.
At -an inquest the juiy returned a verdict of accidental death.
