MILITARY PAGEANT

AT NEWTOWN PARK. FOR. COMMUNITY CLUB AND REGIMENTAL FUNDS. The Mayor, Mr R. A. Wright, M.P. presided over a well-attended meeting at the Town Hall last evening of those interested in the forthcoming military tournament and citizens soldiers’ pageant at Newtown Park in March. The net profits are to be equally divided between the local regimental tunds bnd the community club. Details of the pageant, which will depict the British Army as it has developed through the centuries, show that accurate dressing for the periods is guaranteed by the highest British authorities. The Mayor said the object of the pageant appealed to him because it was for the purpose of assisting young people along right lines. Mr A. Gray, K.C., spoke in support of the pageant and the purpose to which the funds were to be devoted. The club had been in existence for years and was now in need of funds. Colonel Fuller, on behalf of the Wellington Garrison, said *!:■s pageant would show that tbe citizen soldiers had the public behind them, and announced that there would he a parade of the whole of Wellington Garrison on the opening day of the carnival, 'there would be various territorial performances, competitions and -displays by crack units and members of the permanent forces, and also the night attacks. Mrs Chatfield reported on the prospects of holding a queen carniva l , which would, she was sure, receive the support of the sports bodies. Major-General Sir Alfred Robin remarked that now more than at any time was the defence force in need of assistance and the pageant deserved very success.
