FIRST INNINGS REALIBEB 484 FINE CENTURY BY PRINCE. At Kelburn Park on Saturday Institute gained a three -point win over Thorndon by one wicket and 104 runs On the first innings. When stumps were drawn on the previous day Thorndon were all out for 360, while Institute has no wickets down for 50 with Banks (32) and Nelson (16) the not out batsmen. The pair commenced against the bowling of Leggatt and Taylor, :ud for a time the former trundler, who was swinging from oft to legt, kept the Batsmen quiet. The batsmen got into their stride soon after, however, and both were going Well when Banks was given out lbw to Ellerm when his score was 81. Nelson fell to the same bowler soon after, and wickets were falling fairly quickly. Foley was the only one of the next five batsmen to make a stand, and ran up a useful 30. The score stood at 278 when Barr became associated with Prince, and the pair tackled the bowling with confidence. Three hundred was passed in quick time, with Prince giving a delightful display of vigorous cricket. He placed his shots all round the wicket, and his off driving was crisp and clean. Just as the soore was nearing Thorndon’s total of 360 he reached his century, and went on to make 144 before being caught behind the 6tumps by Warne. With Barr he had put on 137 funs, and, his innings included two Sixes and 23 fours. He had hatted about two hours. Barr Went oh to make 88 before failing a victim to a catch by Warne on Phillips. This player, who was promoted with Condliffe from the junior ranks to take the places of James and Dempster, showed great premise as a batsman.
