CARNIVAL AT NEWTOWN
INTERESTING MOTOR AND ATHLETIC EVENTS. The carnival at Newtown Park on Saturday night completed the numerous attractions that have taken place during Welcome Week. There was again a large attendance, and the evening was an enjoyable one in every respect. The following are the details of the results: — ONE MTT.K RELAY RACE. Olympic Harriers (P. Wilson, J. Pretty 2 MOTOR-DRIVING CONTEST Some years ngo tho driving competitions in the show rings were quite a feature, and even to- this day the tandem team and four-in-hand are still to, the fore in all the leading shows in Great Britain, but it has quite died out hore. By the popularity of tho motor driving contests held by the Carnival Committee on Saturday night tho motor driving contest is evidently destined to take the place of tho horse in such contests. About thirty cans were lined) up for the competition, and a display of excellent driving and manoeuvring by experts, both men and ladies, was witnessed. Tho Carnival Association made a venture when it put on such a programme, but its success was demonstrated, and they are assured of something much bigger in their next venture of such a kind. The"results were: — CLASS A.—-HEAVY CARS. Pickering, Buiok, and Moncrieff, Buick, 210 points each; Carter. WiUys Knight, .195 points, 3; Pettman, Dodge, 193 points. 4. Also competed—Wall, Ansaldo, 183; Sneddon, Jewett, 182; Nattrass, Oakland, 181; Foothoad, Oakland, 181; Shaw, Jewett, 180; Mitchell. Mitchell, 180; Hanning. Premier, 178; Griffin, Willys Knight, 175; Ooster, Willys Knight, 171; Loviek, Jewett, 170; Smith, Rexington, 156; Wall, Kissell, 155. In the run off Mr Pickering defeated Mr Moncrieff by 206 points to 204. Time, 2mln 17sec. CLASS B. LIGHT DIVISION.
