N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS WELLINGTON’S LACK OF SUCCESS. TWO DOMINION RECORDS CREATED. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, January 21. New Zealand swimming championship meeting opened this afternoon under very auspicious condition in beautiful weather, and all arrangements at Victoria avenue Baths were excellent. There was a very large attendance, seating accommodation being provided for two thousand. Some fine swimming was witnessed, though better times could have been put up in several cases if the winners had been pushed. Results: — MEN’S N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP. First Heat—L. Fairgay (Auckland!, 1; V. Reid (Wanganui), 2; M. C. Stockley (Auckland), 3. Led all the way, and won by three yards. Time, 61 3-ssec. Second Heat—C. Claridge (Wellington), 1; W. F. Smith (Auckland), 2; D. Murrell (Wellington, 3. T. McKeague (Hawke’s Bay) also competed. Won by a touch, third man yards away Time, 64 3-ssec. Third Heat—N. C. Batchelor (Canter bury), 1; J. Enwright (Auckland), 2; E. Patterson (Wellington), 3. Also started —A. Adamson (Hawke’s Bay), J. Jope (Wanganui). Won by a touch, with third right up. Time 61 4-ssec. Final. •T. There was a desperate struggle, resulting in Lindsay getting up on the rope to tonch a fraction quicker. McTigue was twelve yards away, and Stokes was a fair fourth. Time, 2min 43sec Sectional times were 50yds 30 2-ssec, 75yds 4-7 3-ssec, 100yds 65 8-ssec, 125yds 85 S-sscc, 150yds lmin 45 l-ssec, 175yds 2min 6seo, 300yds 2min 27 l-ssec. Welsh (Canterbury) Miss Shand forged ahead from an even start, and at 75yds, which was covered in 51 l-ssec, was a yard in front of Stockley. Svenson (Wanganui) 8 Scotten led by small margin from outset and won a fine race with very little to spare. Fifty yards took 42 2-ssec, and whole distance 67 4-ssec, which is a New Zealand record. 50 YARDS JUNIOR GIRLS’ CHAM. PIONSRIP. First Heat—L. Contts (Auckland), t; M. H. Fairey (Hawke’s Bay), 2; L. Cunnold (Auckland), and C. Wilson (Auckland). Wilson led over the early stages, but with a furlong gone Atkinson took the lead, and at 500 yards was ten yards ahead of Hill.
