PERTH SENSATION

FRENCHMAN 'ARRESTED. IDENTIFIED AS ESCAPEE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received January 24, 7.45 p.m.) PERTH, January 24. A Frenchman, named Paul Lempriere, has been arrested in connection with the robbery, and charged with stealing £42 from the West Perth Post Office. The police state that Lampriexe is identical with Claude Devere, who, in November last, escaped with another prisoner from Bendigo gaol. Prior to escaping, Devere made an unsuccessful attempt, for which he was sentenced to an additional eighteen months. A sensational robbery occurred in Perth on January 17th. A welldressed man entered the West Perth Post Office, and, covering the manager with a revolver, emptied the cash drawer, securing about £2O. Police-Sergeant Hunter, seeing a man running, pursued the robber, who turned and fired at the police officer, but missed. He then ran to a motorcar and compelled the driver, at the revolver’s point, to start. A police motor-cycle followed, and on reaching the park the robber left the car and dived into the bush, the police following. The fugitive fired five running shots at them, thereby securing a lead. Emerging from the park he held up another motor-car, and compelled him to drive rapidly away, and so escaped.
