POSITION BETTER
BUT COUNTRY PARALYSED. MANUFACTURERS CLOSING. (Sydney “Sun” Cable.) (Received January 24, 12.40 a.m.) LONDON, January 22. The managers are informed that Mr Bromley refuses further concessions* The present offer stands. The state of the services, with some exceptions, is better than, was anticipated. There is no reason why the position should not improve. Nevertheless, reports from the country show a creeping paralysis overtaking industries. Many steel and tinplate works, blast furnaces, paper mills, hardware, and motor factories are closed, owing to the shortage of raw materials. The Midland mines also are closing.
