CARNIVAL EXECUTIVE COMPLAINTS AT “LACK OF PUBLIC SUPPORT.” “POOR ENCOURAGEMENT.” At a meeting of the Carnival Executive, yesterday, it-was pointed out that numbers of patrons of Newtown Park each evening obtained admittance by. scaling the fence at the hack. The association (it was explained) is under very heavy expense in arranging the procession, ground rent, advertising, bands, amusements, prizes, etc., and it is only by charging Is in gate money that they can pa.y expenses. “It is a particularly mean person,” it was said, “who will scramble through the trees and over the fence to gain admittance and evade payment.” It was mentioned that two of the fairer sex were very impolite when caught half way through the fence and turned back. The police have now taken the matter in hand and will deal with tho situation. AT LYALL BAY A POOR RESPONSE. It was also mentioned, that the way the public fails to support any effort to provide for their enjoyment was manifested at Lyall Bay on Sunday last. A very fine programme of drill, life saving, swimming and surf boating was provided by tlhe life saving clubs, also a leading band to provide music. Tho •beach was crowded with people, and everyone enjoyed the programme and the music. It was counted a most enjoyable afternoon. It cost the Carnival and Advertising Association approximately £2O to provide the music, trophies and advertising. A collection was taken up to defray these expenses, and the sum of £5 14s was subscribed, leaving the association a deficit of £l4 6s to make good. “This,” it was said, “is poor encouragement for anyone attempting to do that which everyone says should l be done, ‘brighten our city, her parks and fine beaches.’ It can .be done, but the people must contribute their modest mite to make it possible, not otherwise,” added a prominent member of the committee. AT NEWTOWN PARK WET (WIEATEEER SPOILS SPORT. Football at Newtown Park was, in the main postponed last evening. Two matches were, however, commenced but had to be stopped owing to the downpour. In the match, girls versus boys, the girls scored two goals (Misses Reed and Thomas) and the boys one (Burton). Mr Fama was referee but had to stop the game which will probably be concluded on Saturday. The Y.W.O.A. girls scored two goals against the Government Printing Office girls at basketball. This game had also to be jjostponed, before the printing office had scored a goal.
