“ARE YOU THERE ? ”

HUNDRED A MONTH INCREASE IN WELLINGTON TELEPHONE SUBSCRIBERS. A BUSY STAFF. When the telephone rates were revised a few months ago, rumours were rife as to the number of subscribers who were having their telephones disconnected on tho ground that they were not prepared to pay the increased charges. Yesterday, Ylr A. Shrimpton, chief P. and T. engineer, informed a “Times” reporter, that in spite of the revised tariff, applications by new subscribers were rolling in merrily. “YVellington city has put on an average of 100 per month since the new tariff came into operation.” They were taken in turn, and where there is a minimum of work to be done, the subscriber is linked upjn the course of a day or two. Where there is some cable work to do it takes a little longer, but the connections are being made with the least possible delay.
