MR WIGNALL FINDS FAULTS IN “WORKERS 5 PARADISE.” “RENTS A SCANDAL.” By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received December 13, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, December 13. In the course of an interview on his arrival in England to-day, Mr James Wignall, the Labour representative on the Overseas Settlement Commission, said: “We have heard too much flowery stuff about Australia being the working man’s paradise. There is more poverty in Australia than we expected to find. When I. inspected Melbourne I was absolutely astounded. The house rente there are legalised robbery, and a positive scandal. Anyone who 6ays there is no poverty in Australia tells a lie. I have seen it. “But the failures there aro not greater than the successes. Indeed, if I were a young man with all my life ahead of me I would not be afraid to take the risk, but it is no place for elderly people to start life. Australia has great possibilities ahead. Yet I was unfavourably impressed with the conditions of life in the cities, and, to a large extent, with the life in the country. “The Australians,” added Mr Wignall, “are a most patriotic people, who are building up a nation of sturdy men, beautiful women, and lovely children.”
