GENEROUS GIFT
LAND. AT HAYWARDS. MR GEORGE’S OFFER ACCEPTED. The City Council last evening decided to accept the gift to Wellington by Mr W. George of land at Haywards. Mr George made two distinct effeee. The first was all the land alongside the Pahautanui road and giving an approach to the Haywards railway station, and one acre at Look-out point, with the right to traverse the bush to the point. There are approximately one hundred acres in this area, which contains some beautiful natural bush and good camp land. This was offered unconditionally, and its entrance is about 100 yards from Haywards railway station. The second is an area of 33 acres of bush extending along the hillside, and reaching down to the river, with about six chains frontage, this area being connected with the one first mentioned by a right-of-way, and being a most valuable piece of bush. Mr George asked that the council should, in future years, use its best endeavours to have the scenic reserve adjoining the land opened up by road for the use of the public. When the land was first offered there were • number of conditions attached. These hare all now been deleted, and the area first offered has been added to. The land is to be called Reith Park, and, with its bush, should prove a favourite resort for the people of the city. No one is needed to take charge of it immediately, though some fencing may have to be done to keep stock from wandering upon the land. f£he area is being taken over as plantation land, and, as such, will not fee ratable.
