GISBORNE CELEBRATES
NEW BRIDGE OPENED A HAND SO ALE STRUCTURE. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, November 24. The new Peel street bridge was opened this afternoon to replace the old structure over the Tnraheriu river, connecting the town with the suburb of Whatatpoko. The bridge is 420 feet long and 40 feet wide, and is built of ferro-con-orete. It is of handsome design, and was part of the loan proposal of £60,000, the other works, which are all finished, being the concreting of Peel street, road work, and an extension of the tramway system through Whatatpoko to the borough boundary, a distance of one and 'a naif miles. Of the loan money the contractor, Mr Goodman, allocated £24,970 towards the bridge. The town was decorated, and the first tram was driven over tho bridge along the lino to the borough boundary.
