THEFT OF TYRES
YOUNG ENGINEER’S LAPSE. PROBATION GRANTED. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, November 23. William James Lance Stevens, wh*. had pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to the theft of motor tyres tod tubes valued at £Bl 10s belonging to Royd’a Motors, Ltd., "by whom he was employed, came up before Mr Justice Adams for sentence. • When arrested accused said he committed the crime because times were bad, and he wished to show his employers that he was doing good business. Mr Amodeo, who appeared for Stevens, said he was 21 years of age, was born in England, and became a practical engineer there. Coming to New Zealand about two yearß ago, he worked for the Tramway Board, and later for Royd’e Motors, Ltd. He was married about four months ago. His Honour: Did he come out aa an assisted immigrant? Mr Amodeo said he carno out because of slackness in the engineering work in England. He could not get employment, and he had not been in trouble before. Counsel asked for probation. The Crown Prosecutor said that it seemed to be a case in which prisoner should bo given a chance. Stevens was admitted to probation for three years.
