BETTERING THEIR CONDITIONS.
REPORT OF COMMITTEE. Router’s Tolesrram. LONDON, October 29. The committee appointed by the Ministry of Labour to inquire into the conditions and supply of domestic labour recommends the instruction of schoolgirl* in domestic science. On the completion of the course they should be given certificates of proficiency, and scholarships should be provided for those who are desirous of completing a specialised course. Regarding .women in private domestic employment, the committee recommends that there should be. as an alternative to unemployment, a benefit Rehome under which a pension of 15s a week would be obtainable tip to the age of 55. “HONOURABLE PROFESSION.”
Another recommendation is that women domestic workers who are statutorily qualified should he entitled to a Parliamentary vote on the same residence qualification,r as men, 'Hie report urged that unofficial organisations, such as the Young Women’s Christian Association. and private individuals, should do their utmost to promote the provision of better social, recreational, and educational advantages for domestic workers, and to uphold the dignity of domestic service as a skilled and honourable' profession.
