MEAT BOARD CONTROL
CONFRONTED Wlfg DIPPIOCLTHJg,
MR MoLEOD, M.P., ON R6BITIG*. # • Per Press Association. MASTERTON, October 18. Speaking at a meeting of the Martinborough branch of the Farmers’ Union. Mr A. D. McLeod, M.P., for Waratapa, said “It makes one almost despair when our own president and many branches rush into resolutions and print without apparently considering the difficulties confronting the Meat Beard, or even the responsibilities attaching to their owp position. One of our outstanding difficulties was to produce a bill which, while not giving the control we required, in no way broke existing oontraots or depreciated the seouritiee of lending institutions or depositors. ASSURANCES OF HONESTY.
"From the Primo Minister down we gave assurances of our honesty of intention in this rfcspeot, and in that we had the backing of 60 per cent, of the print ary producers, of whom whatever may be said it cannot be Said that they are breakers of faith. It was hoped that Without actual legislation satisfactory arrangements might be made whereby the treering works would freeze on owners' account along the lines of justice to all. If this is now found possible more drastic action may be required, but what I want to point out about the thing is than if we are going to dictate to whom lending people Of, institutions shall realise securities which they have come by without any contravention of the law then the springs of credit will dry up to the detriment of many -struggling freezing companies throughout New Zealand. A DIFFICULT POSITION. “To pass resolutions at this stage with?ut any knowledge of the fact is only to urther embarrass the Meat Board in what all of us, having a knowledge of the position, known to be a very difficult One. It is only going to add fuel to the propaganda of ottr most dangerous opponents if they can say that we, as primary producers, elect men to most Important positions and then do not trust them.” MEASURE APPROVED. The branch passed a resolution expressing emphatic approval of the Dairy Control Bill, and urged every dairy farmer to record his vote.
