THE LACK OF EXERCISE

A PARABLE OF SAFED, THE SAGE.

“Once upon a time there was a Man of Business. And he was Tired. And I have never been able to learn what it is that Maketh the Tired Business Man Tired. But this man was really Tired. And he went unto a Physician, w-ho took his Blood Pressure, and listened to his -Heart Action, and said. ‘Thou must have Outdoor Exercise.’ “So this man juined a Golf Club, which cost him an Entrance Fee of Five Hundred Shekels and Two Hundied Shekels more for Annual Dues. And he bought some Clubs, and some Balls. And every time he set a Ball on the Tee, it was another Dollar Bill that ho sent off into the Tall Grass. And what Exerciae ho did not get, his Caddy got hunting for the Balls. “And he bought an Automobile to take him to the Golf Club and back. And his Blood Pressure went down, and so. did his Ban-k Account. “And one day he received a Beautiful Letter from the Bank, telling him that his Bank Balance was written in Red Ink. And he hurried down to the Bank and discovered that it was easy to make and possible to float and hard to pay a thirty days’ Note. “And he -began to Worry and his Blood Pressure went up again. “And he talked it over with his Wife. “Now she was wise in her generation. And she inquired of him saying, “ ‘How far is it around the Golf Course?’ “And he said, ‘I should think about Five Miles, not counting the Nineteenth Hole.’ ‘'“And she inquired, ‘How far is it to the Golf Club?’ ' “And he said, ‘About Two Miles and the Half of a Mile.’ “And she said. ‘Thou did’st buy an Automobile to take thee five miles for the privilege of walking five miles.’ “And he considered the matter. “And he sold his Automobile, and he sold his membership in the Golf Club, and ho and his Wife they walked np to the Golf Club -and back, and he' felt as good as if he had walked five miles around the course. “And he said, ‘To-morrow we will walk in another Direction.’ “And they walked as far in another Direction, and rested together, and had a Glass of Lemonade, and returned “And hs said, ‘This doth nob. exercise mine Anns, hut I have a hoe and a Garden.’ So he and his Wife worked in the gyjden. “And his Blood Pressure came down and his Bank Account filled up ‘And he said, ‘There are men who ought to plav Golf, but I am not one of thorn, and I am getting the value of it in other and Less Expensive ways. For there is little need thaj I should keep an Automobile to convey me Five Miles for the sake of getting mi to a place where I can walk Fire Miles.' “And if his Blood Pressure getteth much lower and his Bank Account n-uch higher, it may ho that he will again take up Golf.”
