BACK TO AMERICA
BONES OF FAMOUS GENERAL. COFFIN DISCOVERED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association (Received October 11, 7.35 p.m.) LONDON, October 10. The coffins of General Oglethorpe and his wife were found in Cranham Church at the expected spot. The name-plates were still bright and easily decipherable, and bore the words. “General Oglethorpe, 1783,” and “Lady Elizabeth Oglethorpe, 1787.” Dr. Jacobs, president of the Oglethorpe University of Atlanta, was present at the excavation, and tola a “Daily Chronicle” interviewer: “Foi me nothing can compare with the solemn reverence I felt when I entered the tomb. It came to my mind that Jamea Edward Oglethorpe is no longer a heap of dust and bones, but once again the most powerful personality i n Georgia. I believe his influence for good will be wider and more powerful in the next two centuries than in the two which have passed.” It is expeected that the bodies will be taken to Savannah in an American warship.
Savannah, a city and port of the State of Georgia, was founded in 1733 by the English general, Oglethorpe.
