THE RAILWAYS
MINISTER SAYS “THEY ARE HOLDING THEIR OWN.”
Speaking on the position of the railways, in reply to a deputation, the Hon. J. G. Coates said that at present, in comparison with last year, this year’s figures were holding their own, and showed a slight improvement, but, in order to pay 3£ per cent, interest, the railways would have to pay better for the remainder of the year. He did not suggest the “cutting” of wages, but other economies would have to-be effected. He was serious when he stated that State servants should not be paid less than those outside the service, taking into consideration, of course, the benefits civil servants derived from superannuation, housing, and other privileges. Economy at the moment was the only way to bring about the desired change to an allround reduction.
