SMALLPOX ON MAKURA
VESSEL QUARANTINED MILD FORAI OF DISEASE CONFINED TO TWO CHILDREN. AIAILS NOT LANDED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Alay 17. An outbreak of alastrim, a mild form of smallpox, which is confined to two children on board the Alakura, .produced an unexpected development when the vessel anchored in the stream at 1.30 p.m. on arrival from Vancouver, and following the medical examination. As a jnecaiitionary measure the Port Health Officer (Dr. Sharman) gave instructions for the steamer to proceed’ to Alotuihi quarantine station till to-morrow morning. PATIENTS ARE CHILDREN. The two patients arc third-class male passengers, aged about 12 and 13 years respectively. They joined the steamer at Vancouver bound for Wellington, and were first confined to bed last Saturday, about the time the ship reached Suva, and were isolated by the ship’s doctor. LARGE MAIL ON A r ESSEL. The Makura had 140 passengers foAuckland and Suva, also 670 bags of English and American mails foi the Dominion, and a quantify of cargo for Auckland. The mails were not landed pending instructions from Wellington. The two patients remain on the ship under the ship’s doctor’s care. MORE LUCE CHICKENPOX. The Makuira’s patients and passengers will land at the quarantine station after vaccination to-morrow. The cargo and mails will be fumigated, and the mails will be landed to-day. After janding passengers the ship will be disinfected, and it is probable that Sydney passengers, numbering 50, will then return on board and the vessel will proceed in quarantine to Sydney. The period of the quarantine for the 100 Auckland passengers will he determined by the chief health officer. The port health officer says tho complaint is nearer cliickenpox than smallpox. A later message from Auckland states that the Alakura has about 100 passengers for Auckland and 50 for Sydney.
