SECONDARY EDUCATION

DECISIONS OF CONFERENCE. REFRESHER COURSE WANTED. The annual meeting of the Secondary Schools’ Association commenced yesterday at Wellington College, Mr T. R. Cresswell presiding, and about fifty delegates being present. The chairman remarked that their meeting this year was not quite as largo ns in previous years owing to the number of celebrations at which various members had to bo present. The Minister had issued an invitation to members of the conference to afternoon tea, but while appreciating highly his offer, they had felt that they could not commit themselves to tho giving up of a whole afternoon of a crowded session. Air Cresswell then delivered an address upon the examination system, which appears elsewhere in this issue. OFFICERS ELECTED. The following officers were elected: — President, Mr J. Drummond; vice-pre-sident, Aliss N. E. Goad; representatives for the Educational Association, Miss M. V. Gibson, Messrs J. Drummond, T. R. Cresswell, T. M. Renner, and F. Milner. MARKS AND AIATRICULATION. The following remits were carried:— “That tho Secondary Schools’ Associations direct the attention of the Senate to tho inconvenience caused to individuals and to schools by tile lateness of issue of marks in the university examinations, and requests that the marks be issued as soon as possible.”—(Southland 8.H.5.) “That the Minister, the Department, and the Senate of. the University bo asked to take tho necessary steps to bring about an early application of tho accrediting system in lieu of the- matriculation examination." (Exectulive N. "That in the opinion of this association, candidates taking Latin and no other foreign language for the university entrance scholarship examination, should not suffer the penalty' at present infposed of being unable to chooso subjects capable of giving the maximum marks.” —(Timaru 8.H.5.) “That questions on history ond geography be removed from the Einglish eyllaubus for matriculation.”—(Palmerston North B H.S.) “That the syllabus of work in Latin and French for matriculation be made more definite.”—(Nelson Boys’ College.) "That the University Senate he again asked to arrange that the notification card sent to candidates who have gained partial matriculation, shall also state tho name of the subject in which the candidate lias failed.’’ Palmorston North 8.H.5.) “That school season tickets and free school season tickets b© made availablo tor the duration of each school term instead of, as at present, for three months.” —(Napier ji.ii.S.) REFRESHER COURSE WANTED. “That in the opinion of this association, the grant made to university scho-larship-holders should be increased, as scholarship students are sometimes prevented by lack of funds, from following preferred courses ut the university."— (Timaru 8.H.5.)
