THE CITY RATES
'COMING IN STEADILY
The city rates for the current year are reported to be coming in freely, and it is expected that there will be few payments outstanding at the end of the financial year, which closes at ‘the end of next month. About 2000 “reminder” notices have recently been dispatched from the rats collector’s offioe, and they are being responded to satisfactorily. The demands for the second instalment of rates were sent out somewhat later than usual—in December instead of m September. A big economy will bo effected in the next financial year as a result of the decision to make only one demand for the year. The notices will be served very soon after the rate has been strnak by the new council, which will be towards the end of May. It will not be compulsory on the part of ratepayers to pay the full amount in one sum. The money may be paid (if preferred) in two instalments as at present. The issuing of the demands only onoe a year will cut down administration and postage expenses considerably, and will save a groat deal of work in the rates office. It is also expected that the new system will result in earlier receipt of rates, for many people will prefer to pay the whole amount for the year in one payment. This will esse the council’s finances, in the earlier months of the year. '
