N.S.W. TEAM TO-DAY WELCOME AT TOWN HALE. The New South Wales bowling team arrives in Wellington by the Maui Trunk express to-day from Palmerston North. In the original programme a five days’ stay in Wellington was arranged, but owing to a three days’ tour of the West Coast having been added to the itinerary the Wellington stay has been reduced to three days. They leave Wellington cm the 10th, and vviil be* in 'Christchurch from February 14th to 17th, from where they go on to Oamaru. They attend the civic reception at the Town Hall at 5 p.m., and this evening will be the guests of the Wellington Club. At £>.3o to-morrow they leave for a motor trip through Petone, Hutt, Waiwetu, and Heretaunga to Trentham. The Wellington Golf Club is providing lunch at tho golf house at Heretaunga. On tho return journey tho visitors will be the guests of the Valley clubs, Lower Hutt, Petone, Petone Central, and will play a game on the Central green. On Friday they will bo the guests of the Wellington Bowling Club, and will bo received by the president, Mr H. G. Smith, at tf.3o. They will then play five rinks against Wellington Club members, and in the afternoon five rinks against new teams. A smoko concert will be held in tlm evening. Victoria Bowling Club will entertain the visitors on Saturday, and will play in the afternoon, leaving by the evening boat, Ngaio, for Nelson. They leave Nelson early on Sunday morning for the West Coast by special c-ara via Waimea Plain, Spooner's Range (1500 feet), Hope Saddle (2000 feet), Buller river, and Buller Gorge, a distance of about 150 miles. They play at Westport in the morning, leaving in the afternoon for Reefton and Greymouth. On Tuesday they leave by train for Otira Gorge, which will probably close down ere long upon the opening of the Arthur’s Pass tunnel. They will traverse Arthur’s Pass by the old coach, a height oT 3038 feet, arriving in Christchurch at 6.30 p.m.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNUAL TOURNAMENT. - WELLINGTON AND THORNDON GfiJiEINS BUSY. The annual bowling tournament held in Wellington, in connection with the Public Service, an event which is looked forward to with considerable interest, opened on Wellington and Thorndon greens s'esterday, the weather conditions being ideal. The recent rains had brought along fresh growth and. the dry spell over tho week-end had made the greens very keen and fast. The competition was inaugurated seven years ago by the- present secretary, Mr W. R. Jourdain, and has increased in popularity each year, until on the present occasion, when 13 departments are competing. The Post and Telegraph have five rinks, Publio Works, Public Trust and Railways two each, and the remainder one each. Last year the competition was won by the P. and T. Department, and! while the games have been playod in excellent spirit, other departments were keen to wrest the laurels from the P. and T., whose rinks included the redoubtable Brackenridge and Porter. Markman’s (P. and T.) rink eocured a big; win over Waldie (Publio Works) in, the first round, and in the next round Leahy's rink romped home over Lands and Survey, but in this round Markraan (P. ar.d T.) went down to the Printers to tho tune of 22—14. At a late hour it was officially reported that Burdekin 'has since withdrawn from Section D. The winner of the Thorndon section will now play Printing Office at 9.30 o’clock this morning. SECTION WINNERS. Section A.—P. and T. (Leahy) and Public Work*'(Halliday) have had two wins and one lose each. The extra game wa« won by Halliday, who thus won Section A contest. Section B was won by Printing Office, with three wins. Section C was won by P. and T. (Dali), with three win*. Section D was a tie between P. and T(Brackcnridge) and Public Trust (Burdekin), each, with two wins and one loss. They play-off at 9.30 this morning. Section E resulted in a tie between Ijreasury (Scott) and Education (Portions), each with two wins and one loss. Thig will also be played off at 9.30 this morning, and at the same time the winner of Section B plays the winner of Section D, and the winner of Section 0 plays ilie winner of Section A. The winner of Section E will have a bye, and the finals will be played at 2 o’clock on the Wellington green. . Tea was partaken of in the club room at Wellington green, at the close of which Mr Jourdain congratulated ail concerned upon the sporting and gentlemanly spirit which had been shown in the games. This was the seventh year of the competition. Regret was expressed at the absence of the treasurer, Mr J. Caughley, Director of Education, who is. at present out of Wellington. NEWTOWN CLUB. The New South Wales team of bowlers who are visiting the Dominion played in rinks games here to-day against representatives. of Woodville, Pahiatua, Dannevirke, and Palmerston North bowlers. The “weather was not conducive to a display of scientific bowling, being of a boisterous nature. The games consisted of eighteen heads, instead of the usual twenty-one, the aggregate scores being:— Combined players 103 points New South Wales 90 points To-morrow (Thursday), at 2.30 p.m., five rinks of New South Walee bowlers will be entertained by the Hutt Valley Clubs on the Central green, Petone.
