OUR LATENT WEALTH
DEVELOPMENT SCHEME. TAXATION THE BARRIER. With reference to the New Zealand’s Latent Wealth Scheme, the Empire trade and development committee of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce reported to the council of the chamber yesterday afternoon that it had no hesitation in reporting decidedly in favour of this project designed to introduce British capital and additional suitable population into the Dominion. The committee not only recommended the council to heartily endorse tfio idea, but is of the opinion that the matter is of such vital importance to the Dominion, and that the present conditions ruling in Great Britain I® opportune for its consummation, that the council was strongly urged to actively interest members in fostering in every way its successful accomplishment. In the course of a brief discussion on the matter, Mr J. T. Martin remarked that it waa hopeless to expect the English capitalist to invest largely in New Zealand undertakings so long as the existing heavy income tax on companies and the dual income tax, here and in the United Kingdom, continued. The report was adopted.
