CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. CANTERBURY WINS YALDHUR3T SHIELD. Per Press Association. ' TIMARU, February 2. Tlie swimming championships concluded to-night in beauiful weather before another great crowd. In the 440 yards championship N. £. Batchelor and L. Hill (Canterbury) and D. Murrell (Wellington) were the only starters. Batchelor the pace from the start and led Murrell about a yard at 200 yards, with Hill about five yards further back in third place. This was the position of the swimmers with 90 yards to go, though Batchelor was further ahead. A good struggle was witnessed for second place, but Hill came too late and was five yards behind Murrell, who fell about 20 yards in the rear of Batchelor. Time, smin 50 l-ssec. The 100 yards boys' intermediate race Was for the disqualification of Claridge (Wellington) and Dowsett (Wa* ganui), who were leading most of the way, but swam an erratic , race. The verdict went to McTigue (Canterbury), with Wilkinson (Canterbury) second, and Sound Bay) third. Time, 65 l-sse?. The referee decided that the race be reswum to-morrow. Diving championship. H. Walker (Otago), 1; R. O. Calder (Otago), 2; W. Hicks (holder, Wellington), 3. The fifty yards scratch invitation race was a great race all the way. The batfl 6ecmed a little overcrowded with six swimmers and Atkinson, Murrell and Bnwright seemed to be boring. E. Stap Edwards (Wellington) and Enwright (Auckland) dead-heated, and Atkinson was a very close third. Time. 29sec. The flying squadron race was a runaway victory for Canterbury bv twelve yards, with Wanganui a similar distance ahead of Wellington. Time, smin 3S B-ssec. Canterbury easilv jvon the Yaldhurst Shield with 49 points, Auckland being second with 22, Wellington third with 12. and Wanganui fourth with 5. The War Memorial Shield is undecided till to-morrow, but Canterbury is in an easy lead and are also winners of the polo championship.
