DRUM WIRELESS

SECRET OF NATIVES DISCOVERED

To an Ebglish Political Officer belongs the credit of having discovered the secret of African drum messages, whose accuracy and speed have often been demonstrated in dramatic fashion. Captain Ri. S. Rattray, of the Gold Coast Political Service, as a result of close observation and intimate inquiries in Ashanti, has found that these wireless messages are tonic. That is, they are based and depend on tone. Traveller®, explorers, and scientists have usually ascribed drum messages to a 'code, hut Captain Rattray has taken to England the complete tone system, and will embody the result of his researches in a book. Captain Rattray, who knows both South and AVest Africa, speaks Ashanti and other African languages, and is an anthropologist. He understands the native mind as few Europeans do, and has pursued his researches in a definite, logical way, digging into the remote past of the Ashanti race in which their pre-sent-day habits, laws, and customs have their roots.
