AMOKURA SOLD
FROM GUNBOAT TO COAL HULK. The sale is reported of the hull of the one-time Government training ship Amokura to me Westport Coal Company for use as a coal hulk in Wellington. __ The vessel was bought from the New Zealand Government early in September of last year by Messrs Jory and M'Whannd, engineers, of Wellington, who have sinen been engaged in removing the boilen
and machinery and dismantling thl fitiings. The Amokura was launched at Greenock, Scotland, in 1889, as the firsts lass gunboat Sparrow. Her displacement was 805 tons. She was bought by the New Zealand Defence Department in 1906, and handed over to the Marine Department in March, 1907, for use as a training ship for boys. The Teasel served that purpose until 1919, when she was laid up in Wellington, the boys, however, continuing their training up to Christmas, 1921. Captain Hooper was in command of the Amokura from 1907 to 1930, when he was appointed Nautical Adviser at Wellington.
