VETERINARY SURGEONS

FORMATION OF ASSOCIATION. Advantage has heen taken of the presence of a number of veterinary 1 seurgeons in Wellington attending the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science to hold a meeting to discuss tho formation of a veterinary association. . The meeting was held this week, and was largely attended, all the twentyeight veterinary surgeons now in Wellington being present. After Colonel Young liad explained the object of the meeting, Professor YVoodruff (Melbourne University) and Dr- Sydney Dodd (Sydney University) spoke at length on ilie advantage and the help that such an association would be to the members of the profession individually and collectively. . . The point was stressed that at the piesent time there is no law in New Zealand to prevent unqualified men setting up as vterinary surgeons, and that so long as such a state existed so long would stock owners suffer by having their animals subjected to unskilled treatment. This position in the interests of both the stock owner and the qualified veterinarian, required remedying and. an association could do much* in this direction in influencing the powers that be and educating the farmer to the value of obtaining professional advice for his animals.

After discussion it was unanimously decided to form a New Zealnnl Veterinary Association, and a committee of whuch Mr W. T. Collins, M.B.C.V.S, Wellington, was appointed secretary, was set Up to draw up tho constitution of ihe association for subsequent concideration. After the meeting the members adjourned to the Hiolborn Tea Rooms, where a very pleasant supper in honour of the Australian visitors to the Congress was given by the New Zealand members. The toast of the Australian visitors was proposed by Dr C. J. Reakes and replied to by Professor Woodruff, Dr Sydney Dodd, and Mr Macdonald,, who all expressed thoir very great pleasure in being present at the Science Congress and in meeting so many of their professional brothers in New Zealand.
