At the Herrin massacre trial at MArion, the defence scored a victory when it produced in evidence a letter written by a mine guard long before the massacre, showing that jnacauieguns had been mounted and long distance rifles supplied to the guards, who were anxiously awaiting far a head to appear within three miles for the opportunity to Mow it off. Witnesses who are residents along the street where the mine guards were marched before being killed, declared that they were nnable to recognise any defendant as a member of the mob.
