“NOT PRACTICAL”

SOCIALISTIC OBJECTIVE NEW LABOUR POLICY URGED IN SOUTH AFRICA. - ANIMATED DISCUSSION. BV Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. CAPETOWN, January 2. An animated discussion occurred at the Labour Party’s conference at Durban over Mr Creswell’s proposal to drop the “Socialistic objective” clause from the party’s constitution. Mr Creswell described this clause as unsuitable to the needs of a practicalpolitical party dealing with practical objects. *lt was the subject of. wild misrepresentations and a stumbling block in the wav of a progressive party. If the English Labour Party’s constitution was good enough for Mr Ramsav Macdonald and other prominent Parliamentary representatives, surely it was good enough for South Africa. While a narrow majority is in favour of the proposal, it is extremely doubtful whether Mr Creswell will obtain the necessary two-thirds majority. IN AUSTRALIA EXECUTIVE AND THE LEADERS. SYDNEY, January 3. .The Labour Party’s executive has appointed a committee to draft a reply to the. Parliamentary leaders’ circular. The matter will be fought out at the annual conference in June. The- Federal and State Labour leaders recently issued a joint appeal to the rank and file of the Labour movement urging a change in the method of appointing the executive to control the movement. It pointed ont that the present method of electing the executive at the annual conference does not inspire confidence in the electorates, and it suggested that the electorates. should make the appointments direct.
