HOMEBUSH ESTATE

TO COME IN CITY BOUNDARY. NO OBJECTION FROM MAKARA. At present the Homebush estate, the property of the Wellington City Council, is in Makara County, and pays about £lB per annum in rates to the county. In the last few months the City Council has spent some thousands of pounds in laying out the putting down roads and dividing into building plots, which aro to be disposed of, the idea being to create a new residential area of the city. Naturally the work being done at Homebush will tremendously increase the rateable value of the area, and the City Council, having this in mind, is presenting a petition to Parliament to be allowed to include Homebush estate in the city area. An intimation to this effect was read at the meeting of the Makara County Council and the clerk said it was for the council to say if they would agree to it or fight ii. It would cost a lot of money to oppose it. The rates received from Wellington City Council amounted to £lB a year, but as they were aware the City Council had spent between £20,000 and £30,000, and now wanted it in their own area. If the county council did appeal he did not think any commission would uplioild it after seeing that the city had spent so much money on it. Councillor Styles said he thought when the work was finished it would improve Makara county as well. The clerk added that if Homebush became part of the city it would bring the city abattoirs apDreciablv nearer the boundary, and Inter the "Wellington Corporation might desire to have them brought within their boundary. In that case the Makara County Council might have to consider asking Wellington for a larger contribution towards road maintenance. The chairman: It is not much use fighting it. Tt was resolved" that no opposition bo offered.
