AND WANGANUI UNEMPLOYED. MINISTER ON THE POSITION. Why were the unemployed in the Wanganui electorate Being refused work on the Telief works in the district at Gentle Annie Hill ? asked Mr W. A. Veitch, M.P., in the’ House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. The Hon. J. G. Coates: It is news to me that that is the ease. Mr Veitch: I assure you that it is so. . Mr Coates stalled that what had hap. pened in regard' to the Gentle Annie Formation was that the question had arisen whether; there should he a tnnnel or a -cutting, or ' whether they should follow the present grade lime; and until that point was settled, the work had not been poshed on with. Jle had just received a report that it had bran decided to put a cutting throo jh the saddle to reduce the. grades to about one in fifteen. As to what men were employed on the work he did not know; hut no doubt if there were many unemployed in Wanganui they would be put on that work—married men, of course.
