Mr E. J. Watt has left Hastings Ml Australia. , Professor Marsden has returned from Taupo to Napier. Mr Ri. Girling Butcher, of Wellington is visiting Auckland. Mr F. W. Vosseler, manager of Billiards, Ltd., is at present in Auckland. Mr H. A. Goodwin, manager of Messrs Bannatyne and Hunter, goes north early in the week. Dr F. C. M. Gabites, of Capetown, South Africa, and formerly of Timoru, has arrived in New Zealand. Dr Gabites intends to reside at Auckland. Lieut. Ri. S. Halliwell, M.C.. Area Officer at Masterton, who has been ill for some time, has sufficiently recovered to resume duty. Messrs A. E. Verry and W. R. Ross, the retiring directors, were re-elected unopposed at the annual meeting of ths Rexdale Co-op. Dairy‘Co., Ltd. Mr Leslie W. A. Macarthur, of Christchurch, is visiting Wellington in furtherance of the marine solar salt industry at New Brighton. Canon J. R. Wilford, of Christchurch, who arrived in Wellington on Thursday morning, returned south the same evening.

Mr Hewlett, headmaster of the Hanala Publio School,. has been appointed headmaster of the Woodville School, taking over his new duties at the end of September. Professor J. Macmillan Brown has returned to Chrisigchnlrch after on absence of over nine months, five of which he spent in ethnologist studio on Easter Island. Mr F. Bryant has been elected chairman of directors of the Mangahao (Ruawhata) Co-op. Dairy Co. Mr 8. Bairstow, the retiring chairman, woa also nominated for the position. Mr Mark Nichollr, who is a representative member of the Petone Rugby Foot-. ball Club, is. leaving Wellington to-day . for Auckland, where he has accepted at new past. He has for the last eighteen months been, with the .Colonial Carrying, Company, and yesterday .the members oft the staff gave him a hearty send-off upon bis severing his connection with the firm. As an expression of their goodwill they presented him with a leather suit-case, the ceremony being performed by Mr AV. D. Dons, manager, - who referred to HrNkfinlls’a popularity - and wished his God speed. Ike recipient suitably acknowledged the good wishes of his old colleagues. •

The death was recorded recently of. Mr Robert Tnrbett Douglas, one-of the few remaining 1867 Thames! tee. Scarcely' had the Thames goldfield been proclaim-7 ed when Mr Douglas’s store in Folln’ street became prominent. He threw bis energies into developing the goldfield, both by holding mining shares and rup-' porting numerous tribute parties. Throughout his life, wherever living, bischeerful, -dauntless, courageous personality was an energising, feature largely felt, and it was quickly realised a real live man had arrived to help the chariot along. Mr Douglas was associated with most local movements, and was’ captain of the Thames Rifle Rangers, a notable volunteer company in earlv Thames days.;

The death took place at New Fly-' m.oath of Mr James Hacfie, of Oaonut,at the age of 81 years. He was a native of Scotland, and during Ms esriy Uf6 followed a seafaring occupation, being skipper' of various coastal boats plying round Scotland. He took the keenest interest in yachting, and* waa regarded as one of the best yachtsmen in Scotland. So great was Ms knowledge in this direction that he was ' chosen by Sir Thomas Lipton to judge an important sailing contest. The late. Mr Macfie arrived in Taranaki about 40 roars ago. being one of the originaT leaseholders under the West Coast Settlement Reserves Act. He was also one of the original shareholders of the Oaonni Dairy Company, and in his earlier days associated himeelf in a quiet and unostentatious way with most movements for the advancement of the district.
