MOUNT COOK HERMITAGE
NOW UNDER PRIVATE CONTROL. REDUCED FARES .AND TARIFF. The Government Tourist Department has now completed arrangements with tho Mount Cook Motor Co., Ltd., by which the latter finp will take over complete control of the Mount Cook Hermitage, which .has hitherto been under State management. It is considered that the transport of visitors to Mount Cook, and theii accommodation whilst there, are go closely related that it will be in the publio interest for the two businesses to be operated in conjunction. The new management will employ the same guides and hermitage staff, and will also conduct a general store, where everything required by visitors may be obtained. A reduction in both fares and tariff will take place from October Ist. It is expected that a considerable influx of visitors will commence early in the season, as the weather is not cold at Mount Cook, the rarefied air being fresh and invigorating. It is possible to have a fortnight’s holiday at the hermitage at a cost of about £3O or less for travelling and accommodation. “A Mount Cook trip is not all mountaineering,” remarks a tourist who knows. ‘One need be just as strenuous as and washes, and a grand holiday can be had, amid glorious scenery, without any olimbing at all.”
