RAROA ROAD TRAM

REQUEST FOR EXPEDITION OF wore: DEPUTATION TO THE CITY COUNCIL. A large deputation from the Raroa Road Tramway Advancement Association waited on the City Council last evening in .connection with the -much-discussed Raroa road tram route, and presented reasons why the tramway should he proceeded with as soon as possible. Mr N. I. Gooder presented a petition, signed by upwards of 1000 persons in various parts of the citj and suburbs, praying the council to proceed with the construction of the tramway as early as possible, in furtherance of the wish, of the ratepayers as expressed in the carrying of the ioan schedule in September, 1920. It was pointed out that the Kelburn cable tramway, even though developed to its fullest capacity, would not be able to cope with the added traffic of Karori and Northland, and the council . would make a grave mistake if it attempted to carry out such a proposal. In reply the Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.) said that it was wrong to imagine that the council desired to destroy the scheme. The council 'had made no such decision, though it had alternative suggestions under, consideration. The Eelburn people were hnxious to have a shorter route instead of the round-about route via Raroa road, and he agreed that those who desired a shorter route wore justified in making representations, but not at the expense of other ratepayers. He assured the deputation that the whole Subject would receive close attention. and he trusted the decision would .be acceptable to the association. The matter was subsequently referred to the tramways committee for consideration.
