NATIVE TOWNSHIPS

THE DELAYED FREEHOLDING. EXPLANATION BY PRIME M3N--V-.V ■ ■ ■; ISTER. • PZS PRESS ASSOCIATION. TE KUm, August 31. Mr J. O. RoUsston, the proepectiw Reform candidate: for the Waitczno electorate, has received tbe following communication from the Han. W. B\ Massey respecting tbe freeholding of native townships:— “In connection, with tbe freeholding of the native townships of Tfe Kuiti, Otorohanga, and Taumarunui; the Government has no intention of going back on the promise made some time ago in regard to these freeholding townships. Just at present there is a certain amount of difficulty in making both ends meet, and the. prospect of another weight being added to -the burden which too oountry is already carrying not a particularly agreeable load. However, the position has to be faced. We shall do our best as the applications come in. We wonld like to know exactly what the liability will amount to, and when the money win be required. There is no breach of faith on the part of the Government, and no intention of allowing anything to take place which might be construed that way. It may mean a little delay, bat- I think that is all it may mean.” —(Signed) Massey.
