“VICTIMISATION”

JOCKEYS AND RACING CONFERENCE. QUESTION RAISED IN HOUSE Was it the Government’s intention to introduce an amendment to the Gaming Act this session p asked Mr M. J. Savage (Auckland West) m Parliament yesterday; and, if so, woula the Minister for Internal Affaire pass legislation to prevent the victimisation of jockeys, whose licenses to rids depended upon the Racing Conference P Some jockeys had been refused licenses this season, though recommended by their local clubs; and they were not allowed to speak on their own behalf. The Hon. W. Downie Stewart said that the Government did not propose to introduce any amendment of the Gaming Act this year. He had not heard of this victimisation of jockeys, but he would look into the matter, though he thought it one that the racing authorities should be able to deal with themselves. Mr Savage: They are a law unto themselves. Mr Stewart: We don’t want to import political control into this any more than we can help. But I will look into the matter, and see whether any legislation is necessary.
