ASSIGNEE IN TROUBLE. PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION. GISBORNE, August 16. Twelve charges of defalcations in respect to various bankrupt estates, totalling £l6B, were made against Wil liam Leonard Butler, late Deputy Offi cial Assignee, in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. The accused pleaded guilty in the first case called on, and was com mitted for sentence. Other cases are proceeding. BUTLER BEFORE COURT. COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. GISBORNE, August 18. William Leonard Butler appeared at the Magistrate’s Court to-day on twelve informations involving twentynine charges ‘of fraudulently omitting to account for moneys paid him in his capacity of Deputy Official Assignee. To the first charge, involving the sum of £8 17s 3d, accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. The remainder of the charges were taken collectively, the amount involved being £l5B Os 6d. The Government auditor stated, in evidence, that accused took the position fourteen months ago. Witness took possession of the books in August last and found that they had not- been written up since accused took over. Butler then pleaded guilty to all the charges and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
